Keeping Young Athletes Engaged: A Conversation wiht Former Rugby Star,Sarah Dupont
Welcome back, sports enthusiasts! Today we’re diving into the heart of youth sports with a special guest, former French rugby international and Olympic silver medalist,Sarah Dupont. Sarah, thanks for joining us.
Sarah: It’s my pleasure. Always happy to talk about getting young peopel involved in sports.
the Espace Jeunes in Viassois is making headlines with its action-packed winter break program for young athletes. They’ve got everything from raqball, a sport I must admit is new to me, to hiking, even an eco-conscious canal cleanup. What are your thoughts on this kind of diverse program?
sarah: I love it! Exposing kids to a variety of activities is crucial. Not every kid is going to fall in love with rugby, or football, or basketball. Showing them different options opens doors and helps them discover their passions. Plus, the canal cleanup initiative is fantastic.Teaching young athletes about environmental obligation is essential.
Speaking of unique sports, raqball seems engaging. It sounds like a blend of several different disciplines. Do you think introducing lesser-known sports is a good way to spark interest in young people?
Sarah: Absolutely. It diversifies their sporting landscape and challenges them to learn something new. Familiar sports are great, but stepping outside the norm can be incredibly enriching. It encourages creativity and adaptability, which are valuable life skills.
The program also includes a trip to the Cité de l’Espace. Now, that’s not exactly a conventional sporting venue.
Sarah: (Laughs) You’re right, it’s not. But it still falls under the umbrella of exploration and learning, which are fundamental to sports. Sports aren’t just about physical prowess; they’re about expanding horizons, pushing limits, and embracing new experiences.
The Espace Jeunes seems to be doing a great job fostering a sense of community amongst the youth. How vital is this sense of belonging in youth sports?
sarah: It’s paramount. Sports teach teamwork, interaction, and mutual respect. building a strong community around these activities creates a supportive surroundings where kids can thrive both athletically and personally. It instills a sense of belonging and camaraderie, which can have a lasting impact on their lives.
Sarah, what advice would you give to young athletes, or parents of young athletes, who are looking to get involved in community sports programs like this?
Sarah: Just do it! grab that chance with both hands. Don’t be afraid to try new things, make new friends, and discover your potential. And parents, encourage your children to explore their interests, cheer them on, and celebrate their achievements, big or small.
