“Passion Can’t Justify violence”: An Interview with Former Indonesian footballer Bambang Pamungkas
The recent events surrounding Arema FC’s loss to Persebaya Surabaya have sparked outrage and ignited a crucial conversation about fan behavior in Indonesian football. We sat down with former Indonesian national team captain and football legend, Bambang “Bepe” Pamungkas, to delve deeper into the issues at hand.
Moderator: Bepe, thank you for joining us.These recent incidents involving Aremania have cast a dark shadow over the beautiful game. What are your thoughts on the vandalism at ASIFA and the alleged attack on a young Bonek supporter?
Bambang Pamungkas: It’s truly disheartening to see this kind of behavior from supporters who claim to love the game. While passion for your team is understandable, it can never justify acts of violence and vandalism. We must remember that football is about sportsmanship, respect, and fair play. These incidents damage the spirit of the game and bring shame upon the entire football community.
Moderator: Many argue that the intense rivalry between Arema and Persebaya fuels such incidents. Do you think rivalry inherently breeds violence, or is there something more at play?
Bambang Pamungkas: Rivalry is a natural part of sport. Every club has its rivals, and that creates excitement and anticipation for matches. Though, true fandom should never cross the line into hatred and violence. It’s the responsibility of every supporter, club management, and football authorities to ensure that healthy rivalry doesn’t descend into something dangerous.
Moderator: What steps do you think Arema FC and the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) should take to address these issues and prevent similar incidents from happening again?
Bambang Pamungkas: Arema FC needs to take a strong stance against this behavior. They need to clearly communicate to their supporters that violence is unacceptable and will have consequences. This might involve stricter sanctions against those involved in such incidents, including banning them from matches. The PSSI also needs to play a more proactive role by implementing tighter security measures at matches and by working with clubs to educate their fans about responsible support.
Moderator:
Do you think our fanbase can change? Can we foster a culture of respect and sportsmanship in Indonesian football?
Bambang Pamungkas: Absolutely. I believe the vast majority of Indonesian football fans are passionate but peaceful. It takes the collective effort of everyone involved – clubs, players, coaches, and fans themselves – to create a positive and safe habitat. We need to promote dialog, understanding, and respect between rival supporters. Education plays a crucial role, teaching young fans about the values of sportsmanship and fair play from a young age.
Moderator: Bepe, thank you for sharing your insights. it’s clear that this is a complex issue that requires a multi-faceted approach.
