Asvel’s Young stars Shine Bright at Euroleague Junior Tournament
The future looks promising for ASVEL basketball as their junior squad dominated the Euroleague tournament in Belgrade, securing a decisive victory against local favorites Red Star (80-73).
This triumph highlights the impressive talent pipeline within the Rhône training center, even as the senior team awaits its Euroleague debut. Under the guidance of Pierre Parker, brother of ASVEL legend Tony Parker, the Lyon-based team showcased exceptional skill and determination throughout the competition.
A key factor in their success was the return of Kymany Houinsou, an 18-year-old guard on loan to Pro B side Saint-Quentin. Recalled for the Serbian tournament, Houinsou seized the opportunity to make a statement. After a solid performance against mega Mozzart (88-52) on Saturday, he made his presence felt defensively against Red Star, contributing 14 points and 10 rebounds. A particularly impressive block on Pavle Misic in the 36th minute reignited the Villeurbannaise momentum, ultimately leading to Red Star’s downfall.
Houinsou, alongside Zaccharie Risacher (absent for the final), was one of two players on the junior squad who have already experienced the intensity of professional basketball with the senior team.
Another rising star, 16-year-old Killian Malwaya, captivated scouts with his athletic prowess. Following a 26-point performance in the final group match, Malwaya continued to impress against red Star, scoring 22 points and sealing a fast break with a thunderous dunk over Red Star captain Vladimir pavlovic in the second quarter.
Malwaya’s exceptional performance throughout the tournament earned him the well-deserved title of MVP.
ASVEL’s junior team was the sole French representative at the Belgrade tournament, further emphasizing the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent and its potential to become a dominant force in European basketball.
