Marin Cilic is on the same line as Novak Djokovic and his PTPA regarding the earnings distribution policy within the ATP Tour.
If he has not, however, joined the association created by the world number 1 and Vasek Pospisil, the Croatian develops the same ideas in a recent interview granted to the Germans of Tennisnet.
“I don’t want to criticize anyone, because the ATP in particular is doing a lot in this direction. Here too, a good job has been done. But at the end of the day, it’s true that a lot of the prize money comes from Grand Slam tournaments. If a certain percentage of that money is not going to Challenger events and players who are not in the top 100, there will be no development in tennis. For me, it’s disastrous. I’ve been on the circuit since 2006: the prize money has increased and the players now earn more, but in the end, it’s always the top 100 who can finance their life with this money. For players rated around 150e place in the world, it is difficult to afford a tennis coach, a fitness coach and a physiotherapist. Yet this is what we need to succeed. From this point of view, I am very socialist. The prize money should be distributed much more evenly to give players better opportunities to earn a living. As a tennis community, we don’t value players that aren’t in the top 100 enough. That needs to change. »
