Bad luck for Mark Cavendish: Briton falls hard in Oman and has to give up points jersey after penalty | cycling

Not a good day for Briton Mark Cavendish in the Tour of Oman. Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl’s sprint bomb crashed hard during the stage and after the jury noticed that he also pushed himself a few times on a vehicle, he also had to hand in his points jersey.

More than 60 kilometers from the finish, Cavendish crashed as the peloton was pulled into several echelons. “Unfortunately, I went down quite badly,” the Briton reacted afterwards.

“The luck is that the injuries don’t seem too bad. I was also able to get back on my bike. It will remain with some scrapes and hopefully the other rider involved (Ignatas Konovalovas) is okay too.”

In tomorrow’s stage (Tuesday), Cavendish will no longer start in the green points jersey. The competition jury determined that after his crash he repeatedly pushed himself off a vehicle.

The Briton was fined 300 Swiss francs and 9 points were deducted in the points classification.
