The buzz around Banyoles is deafening. Over 900 cyclists from 35 nations, Olympic champions, world champions – the crème de la crème of mountain biking – are set to descend upon this Catalan city for the 20th Continental Super Cup Massi and Catalan Cup International Biking Point. This isn’t just a race; it’s a spectacle, a party of the sport, and I’m excited to discuss it with a true legend of mountain biking, five-time World Champion and Olympic bronze medalist, Julien Absalon.
Julien, welcome! the organizers are calling this “the most meaningful [mtb] event in the country.” Do you think Banyoles has the potential to become a regular fixture on the international MTB circuit, like Fort William or Val di Sole?
Julien Absalon: Absolutely. Banyoles has the ingredients for success – stunning natural terrain, dedicated organizers, and the unwavering passion of Catalan cycling fans. The course at La Draga park
and Puig de Sant Martirià is naturally challenging and visually stunning. I think it will be a favorite amongst riders for years to come.
That’s a reassuring endorsement from a rider who’s seen it all. The women’s race is shaping up to be a true showdown, with an Olympic champion, reigning world champion and XCM world champion all in the mix. Who are you tipping for victory?
Julien Absalon: It’s a mouthwatering lineup. Evie Richards is dominant, but Jolanda Neff always brings her A-game. Don’t underestimate Mona Mitterwallner either; she’s young, hungry, and incredibly talented. Can Richards secure that hat-trick? It’s going to be a nail-biter!
And the men’s race? With Henrique Avancini back, Alan Hatherly, Simon Andreassen – it’s an unbelievable field!
Julien Absalon: Avancini is always a threat, especially on a technical course like Banyoles. But Hatherly and Andreassen have been consistently strong lately. Don’t forget the local hopes, David Valero and Jofre Cullell.they’ll be fired up by the home crowd.
Indeed, local support will be crucial.Do you think Banyoles’ unique blend of Catalan culture and international appeal makes for a compelling viewing experience for spectators both on-site and online?
Julien Absalon: Definitely.Banyoles offers a fantastic blend of sportsmanship and spectacle. The Catalans are passionate about cycling, and that energy is infectious. Add in the international flavor of the riders, and you have a truly unique event.
Julien, what advice would you give to young aspiring mountain bikers who dream of competing at this level one day?
julien Absalon: Believe in yourself, train hard, and never give up on your dream. Have fun, enjoy the journey, and always remember that the most vital thing is to love what you do.
