Finding Success Off the Pitch: The Story of a Football Veteran
It’s not the typical path for a man with his impressive football history. At 57, without his signature beard, Johan Staelens exudes a calm and approachable demeanor as he discusses his unexpected journey.
“It’s true, it’s not what you’d expect,” Staelens admits. “The landscape of belgian professional football has changed dramatically. With the influx of foreign investors, it’s become increasingly challenging for local coaches to secure positions. Naturally, these investors bring their own trusted staff.”
This reality led Staelens to pursue a more conventional career path. he now works as a commercial representative for a construction company, a role that allows him to indulge his passion for football in a less demanding way.
“It’s essentially a public relations function,” he explains. “I often attend football matches with clients,so it’s still football-related,but without the intense pressure.”
however, the allure of the game never truly fades for a dedicated football enthusiast.Staelens recently took the helm at Hoek, a club with a rich history in West Flanders. His appointment came about through a connection with his former manager, Eric Tetaert, who was aware of Hoek’s challenges and saw staelens as the ideal candidate.
As his arrival, Hoek has experienced a resurgence, securing victories in their last two matches. For Staelens, the current arrangement is perfect.
“Training three evenings a week and playing on Saturdays strikes a wonderful balance,” he says. “It allows me to contribute to the club’s success while maintaining a fulfilling life outside of football.”

Johan: Thanks for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here.
Moderator: Johan, your career path has taken a captivating turn. You’ve transitioned from a high-profile coaching career to a more conventional role in the construction industry while still maintaining a strong connection to football. Can you walk us through that journey?
Johan: Absolutely. As I’ve gotten older, the landscape of professional football, especially in Belgium, has shifted dramatically. The influx of foreign investors has led to a preference for coaching staff brought in from their networks. It’s understandable, but it creates a tough environment for local coaches like myself to find positions.
Moderator: That’s definitely a trend we’ve seen across the globe.
It’s a pity,in a way,to see that local talent sometimes gets sidelined. But you’ve found a way to balance your passions, working as a commercial representative for a construction firm while still being involved with football through Hoek.
Johan: Exactly. It allows me to stay connected to the sport I love without the same level of pressure. I get to attend matches, network with clients, and keep my finger on the pulse of the game.
Moderator:
And it sounds like that role paved the way for your return to coaching with Hoek.Tell us about that experience.

that’s fantastic! It seems like you’ve found a formula that works: maintaining a fulfilling career off the pitch while still contributing your expertise on the sidelines. Did you ever consider hanging up your boots completely?
Johan:
There was a moment when I wasn’t sure what the future held. But the passion never truly dissipated. This arrangement of training a few evenings a week and leading the team on Saturdays feels perfect.
moderator: I can onyl imagine the satisfaction of watching the club progress under your guidance.
Do you think the trend of foreign investment impacting local coaching opportunities will continue?
Johan: It’s a complex issue. On the one hand, it brings resources and a broader outlook to the game. Conversely, it risks squeezing out dedicated local talent who might not have the same network or opportunities.
Moderator:
Absolutely. It’s a crucial conversation that needs to be ongoing in the football community. Now, for our viewers, what are your thoughts on Johan’s turnaround story?
