Bet of 2 archbishops to help Catholic schools

The Archbishop of Los Angeles, Msgr. José Gomez; and the Archbishop of Cincinnati, Msgr. Dennis Schnurr, have made a friendly bet on who will win the American football Super Bowl that will be played on Sunday, and with which they seek to help Catholic schools in both cities of the United States.

The Super Bowl will be played on Sunday, February 13 at Sofi Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Rams, a team that will face the Cincinnati Bengals to define the champion of the National Football League (NFL).

If the Bengals win, Msgr. Gomez will send Msgr. Schnurr products from the famous Porto’s Bakery. If the Rams win, Msgr. Schnurr will send Msgr. Gomez a box of Graeter’s ice cream, some of the best in town.

Both archbishops encouraged the faithful to participate in the bet with the hashtag #BishopsBigGame on social networks and by visiting the website created for the occasion, BishopsBigGame.comin which they can make a donation to the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) of either archdiocese, in order to help with student enrollment.

To begin, indicates a note from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, each archbishop has already made a donation of one thousand dollars to the joint fund.

The CEF of the Archdiocese that wins the bet will receive 60% of the total funds raised, while the second will receive the other 40%.

Archbishop Schnurr highlighted the work of the CEFs and noted that these foundations provide “millions of dollars of financial aid each school year.”

Bishop Gomez said on his turn that he is proud of the “great work of our students, teachers, staff, families and parish communities that make our Catholic schools great; and also for the generous support of the faithful through the CEF, so that our students have the opportunity to learn and grow to become the leaders of tomorrow.”
