Binéfar Celebrates Sporting Excellence at XIX Annual Awards Gala
The Municipal Theater in Binéfar was abuzz with excitement as the town celebrated its sporting heroes at the XIX Binéfar Sports awards Gala. Organized by the town council,the event recognized seven outstanding athletes,clubs,and individuals for thier remarkable achievements in 2020.Mayor Alfonso Adán kicked off the evening, commending the dedication and hard work of athletes, clubs, families, and the Department and Sports Council. He emphasized the importance of their contributions in keeping Binéfar’s sporting legacy alive and thriving.
“Your commitment to excellence inspires us all,” Adán stated. “Seeing your dreams come true at every level fills us with immense pride.”
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards to exceptional athletes across various categories. Sergio Barreda from CD Binéfar was honored as the best team sports athlete, while Paula Ambau (Binéfar Athletics Club) and Rodrigo Pérez (Binéfar Judo Club) received accolades for their promising talent as young athletes. Sergio García (Club Judo Binéfar) was recognized as the best absolute male athlete, and the first cadet team (CF Base Binéfar) was celebrated for their outstanding collective performance.
El Reto de Correr received the sponsoring company award,and José Luis Paricio,a dedicated sports journalist,was presented with a special award from the Department of Sports,acknowledging his lifelong contribution to promoting sports through his work in radio and print media.
The clubs themselves also recognized their own outstanding members, with awards going to individuals who demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication, and sportsmanship across a wide range of disciplines.
Juan Carlos García, the Councilor for Sports, delivered the closing remarks, emphasizing the resilience of Binéfar’s sporting community during the challenging pandemic year.
“despite the obstacles, sport in Binéfar never stopped,” García declared. “We witnessed numerous high-level sporting events, including provincial and regional championships, cups, and tournaments in diverse disciplines like chess, athletics, billiards, soccer, and many more.”
He highlighted the resumption of activities by various clubs, including the Litera Montaña Club, the Cycling Club, the Rhythmic Club, the Basketball Club, and the Hunting and Shooting Club.
García also acknowledged the remarkable achievements of the athletes being honored, mentioning upcoming events like the Spanish Judo Cup in April and the 5 and 10k races in May.
“These awards are a testament to the unwavering commitment of our clubs and the City Council, not only to sporting success but also to the well-being of our community,” García concluded. “Sport is about pushing boundaries, overcoming challenges, and fostering personal growth. It is indeed an integral part of education, the foundation of a strong society, and a worthy investment in our future.”

Indeed, the XIX Binéfar Sports Awards Gala was a testament to that spirit. we saw athletes recognized across various disciplines, from judo and athletics to team sports like football. What struck you most about this year’s event?
Paco Martinez: It was truly inspiring to see such diversity in talent. From promising young athletes like Paula Ambau and Rodrigo Pérez to established stars like Sergio Barreda and Sergio García, it’s clear that Binéfar has a shining future in sport. What impressed me most was the emphasis on collective achievement, with the first cadet team of CF Base Binéfar receiving well-deserved recognition.
Speaking of collective achievement, Juan Carlos García, the Councilor for Sports, highlighted the resilience of Binéfar’s sporting community during the pandemic year. How did you and your fellow coaches navigate the challenges of keeping young athletes motivated and engaged during such uncertain times?
Paco Martinez: It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. We had to adapt our training methods, utilize technology for virtual sessions, and ensure that the mental well-being of our athletes remained a priority. It was a collective effort, with parents, clubs, and the council working together to keep the flame of sporting passion alive.
The dedication of individuals like José Luis Paricio, who received a special award for his lifetime contribution to promoting sports through his journalistic work, is crucial in building that sense of community. Do you agree?
Paco Martinez:Absolutely. recognition should always go beyond the playing field. José Luis has been a powerful voice, amplifying the achievements of Binéfar’s athletes for years. His work inspires generations, reminding everyone of the positive impact sport has on our society.
Looking ahead, what events are you most anticipating in the coming months?
Paco Martinez: The Spanish Judo Cup in April is a major event for our judo club, and of course, the 5 and 10k races in May are always a fantastic display of community spirit and athleticism. We encourage everyone in Binéfar, irrespective of age or ability, to participate and celebrate our sporting heritage.
