Brundle responds to ‘new’ radio messages: “Makes situation uncomfortable”

There has been a lot of buzz in the British press this week regarding radio communications between race director Michael Masi and Red Bull champions Jonathan Wheatley. There was an uproar as Wheatley insisted that Masi steer the lapped cars past the safety car during the safety car period.

In England, the radio fragments were heavily unpacked. However, these were not new, the fragments already appeared on YouTube the day after the season finale, where Max Verstappen was crowned world champion in the final phase at the expense of Lewis Hamilton. The fragments only came online after Mercedes decided not to appeal against the result of the much-discussed race.

Uncomfortable

In any case, radio traffic in England raises eyebrows. Former driver and current Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle also listened to the fragments. Brundle is honest and knows that the audio has been known for a long time. Still, he is clear to his employer: “The fragments themselves are not new. In addition, Masi is not told anything new about the rules regarding the possibilities with the lapped cars. But it makes the situation very uncomfortable.”

Unacceptable

Brundle notices that the whole situation in England is causing a lot of unrest. Almost two months into the race, there is still a lot of anger. Brundle explains the atmosphere: “A lot of people are still angry, especially fans of Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. Personally, I think the most important rule has not been applied. Actually, the safety car should only come in at the end of the race. next lap. But we know that unwritten rules prevented them from wanting to finish behind the safety car. This is really still unacceptable.”
