Carolina Marin, reigning Olympic badminton champion, withdraws from Tokyo

The Spaniard Carolina Marin, Olympic champion in badminton at the Rio Games in 2016, will not defend her title in Tokyo due to a ruptured ligament in her knee, she announced on Tuesday on social networks.

After medical examinations, “It has been confirmed that I tore my anterior cruciate ligament and both menisci in my left knee. I’m going to have to have surgery this week and start recovery.”, added the 27-year-old, who was injured on May 28 in training.

“It’s a new blow that I have to face, but I have no doubt that I will come back”, assures the champion, who already suffered a torn cruciate ligament in her right knee in 2019. The young Spaniard was crowned European champion for the fifth time on May 2 and was a serious candidate for a medal for the Spain at the Tokyo Olympics (July 23-August 8).
