Christian Eriksen is about to return to the football field. The Dane found a new sporting home at FC Brentford after his heart disease. He gives his teammates a clear target.
Es was important to him, an affair of the heart in the truest sense of the word. So he addressed his colleagues right from the start in his new sporting home.
Christian Eriksen does not want any preferential treatment when returning to the Premier League after his heart condition, he has said. “I told my teammates on the first day that there was no reason to treat me with kid gloves. Otherwise I wouldn’t need to be on the football field anymore,” said Eriksen of FC Brentford in an interview broadcast on Sky on Friday. “If I wasn’t 100 percent fit, then I wouldn’t be taking part in this adventure either.”
All tests of his heart were positive, said the 29-year-old, noting that he had received a lot of advice from doctors. Eriksen also spoke to ex-Ajax Amsterdam team-mate Daley Blind, who encouraged him to trust the implanted defibrillator and the technology behind it. Some time ago, Blind himself had one of these implants inserted.
“It is unbelievable what is possible in modern medicine. It’s nice that everyone with an implanted defibrillator can go on living and play high-performance sports,” said Eriksen.
Eriksen completed numerous tests
The 109-time Denmark international had returned to the Premier League on the last day of the transfer window. Eriksen had previously had to undergo extensive medical examinations at newly promoted Brentford.
He suddenly collapsed on June 12, 2021 during the European Championship game against Finland in front of his home crowd in Copenhagen – his heart stopped without warning.
The 29-year-old lost consciousness, doctors rushed in and fought for the life of the midfielder with chest compressions. After long minutes, Eriksen was taken out of the stadium on a stretcher. His teammates shielded him from looks.
After the news came from the hospital that he was out of danger, loud cheers erupted in the stadium. The game continued in the evening, allegedly at Eriksen’s request. Finland won 1-0, the Danish national team later made it to the semi-finals of the European Championship, where they lost 1-2 after extra time to England.
