Cuban basketball team announced for World Cup qualifier

The president of the Cuban Basketball Federation, Dalia Henry, announced in Havana the twelve players that make up the national team in the perspective of the 2023 FIBA ​​World Cup, to be held in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

The team is made up of Jasiel Rivero, Yorman Polas, Karel Guzmán, Yoanki Mencía, Pedro Bombino, Osmel Oliva, Marcos Chacón, Sigfredo Casero-Ortiz, Raúl de la Cruz, Pedro Roque, Neslier Abreu and Yoel Cubilla.

In that group there are seven players who already competed in Chihuahua on November 28 and 29, while Roque from Havana, Abreu from Villa Clara and Bombino from Avilanian return. Casero-Ortiz and De la Cruz enter as debutants.

The last two are owners: they have accumulated a career spanning several years in different European circuits. Casero-Ortiz, 24, lives in Belgium, which he has represented in international competitions in lower categories.

On the other hand, de la Cruz, 28, has lived in Italy for more than two decades, and has played in that country, Germany and Austria. Today he is part of the Basket Casapulla cast, of the Italian Serie C Silver.

“Both have lived abroad for several years and met all the requirements to join our federation. At all times there was a willingness to represent Cuba and they already achieved it. We want to congratulate them for this achievement, hopefully for future competitions we will have the presence of them or other players who are also motivated to defend the national team, “said Henry.

With the inclusion of both athletes, of the twelve members of the national team, seven are active in tournaments in Spain, Germany, Romania, Argentina and Italy.
