Just opposite the Lukoil gas station on the Molenweg on Termolen (Zonhoven), resident Danny Den Hartog has hung a large banner. ‘Lukoil = Putin’ is written in large.
“Perhaps not all Limburgers know this. But Lukoil is indeed a Russian company. The CEO is a Russian, and he is even on the list of persons sanctioned by the European Union. Of every euro that you refuel here, a part automatically goes to Russia, and therefore also to the war. We as citizens may not be able to do very much, but we are not going to support the war, are we? You might as well drive a kilometer further to the next gas station. Even though it might be a few cents more expensive, at least you’re not helping the invasion of Ukraine. I just wanted to make people aware of that. Hence this banner. Have I already had a response? Sure enough: photos have already been taken and they are shared. And now it also appears in the media. Mission accomplished, right?”
Tom De Bruyckere, a spokesperson for Lukoil, responds: “It is not true that the CEO of Lukoil, Mr. Alekperov, should be on a European sanctions list.”
