The sexagenarian had been deprived of liberty on January 18 after being charged with money laundering, tax evasion, private corruption and criminal association in the so-called “Henrotay” file, named after the players’ agent of Liège origin, now established at Monaco. On January 24, the council chamber confirmed this arrest warrant for a period of one month, but the former strongman of the RSCA had appealed through his counsel, Me Daniel Spreutels and Me Alexandre Wilmotte.
If Herman Van Holsbeeck had already been charged in this case in September 2019, without ending up in prison, these are “new elements”, according to the federal prosecutor’s office, which led to new charges and his imprisonment at the prison of Saint-Gilles. “He disputes the fact that these are new elements”, specifies Me Wilmotte. “We assisted him during many hours of hearing and he delivered all the useful justifications to enlighten the investigators”. The lawyer adds that his client “is the only one to bear the weight of this situation when it is not he who is at the origin of this file”.
The state of health of the sexagenarian would be precarious, according to his advice: “the day before his arrest at seven o’clock in the morning, he had been brought back from Spain with medical assistance after being hospitalized for several days”, explains Me Spreutels. He had undergone surgery last summer.
The Brussels indictments chamber announced that it will deliver its judgment on Wednesday, after having examined all the arguments of the parties in this very voluminous file.
