Toronto’s Elizabeth Benn has become the first woman to be hired as director of baseball operations for the New York Mets.
This was learned by the American channel SportsNet New York on Sunday evening.
Benn had worked for major league baseball since graduating from Columbia University in philosophy in 2017. She has worked in baseball league operations, labor relations and youth programs.
The Mets again did an overhaul of their staff lately. In November, they hired Billy Eppler as general manager.
The New York organization has also hired a first woman as coach recently, while Gretchen Aucoin will lead one of the Mets teams in the minors.
Going back to Benn, she’s also the first woman to play in the New York City Metro Baseball League, a weekend league that includes many former college players. The Torontonian plays there as a pitcher.
