The weeks after last June 12 – the day that the heart of Christian Eriksen stopped for a few seconds at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium—, when the initial shock after the unfortunate event subsided, the world of football assumed that the midfielder would never wear shorts as a professional again. Nobody believed in his return except him, who despite being aware that he had suffered an acute myocardial infarction, always thought that he would enjoy his profession again. And indeed, this Saturday, eight months after the nightmare, Eriksen made his debut with humble Brentford in the Premier League and returned to professional football.
It was the 50th minute when a happy murmur filled the Community Stadium on a sunny London afternoon.
Eriksen took off the sweatshirt that confirmed his substitution while the Brentford coach, his compatriot Thomas Frank, gave him the last instructions. The crowd then got up – including Newcastle’s supporters – and presented him with a nice ovation to the Dane who, concentrated, quickly went out to the green to try to reverse the course of a match that his team lost 0-2.
Like a gray Brentford, who has gone seven games without winning in the League, the Nordic midfielder did not show his best football. Although, obviously, his performance on the field was the least of it. His team lost and is dangerously close to the decline, but he has already won. After that terrible afternoon in the capital of his country, Eriksen felt like a footballer again.
