Dortmund Stumble, Europa league Heats Up: A Chat with Football Legend Ally McCoist
Today we’re joined by Scottish football legend and former Rangers manager, Ally McCoist, to dissect the latest happenings in the UEFA Europa League. Ally, welcome to the show!
Ally McCoist: Thanks for having me! It’s always a pleasure to chat about the beautiful game.
Let’s dive straight into the action. Dortmund’s European journey came to a crashing halt after a 2-2 draw against your old club, Rangers. They were ultimately undone by the first-leg deficit, but put up a fight tonight.
AM: Aye, a hard-fought battle it was.Dortmund are a top side, no doubt about it. But Rangers showed grit and determination. That second goal from Tavernier, even from the penalty spot, was pivotal. It gave Rangers the cushion they needed to see it through.
You mentioned the penalty. Many Dortmund fans felt it was a soft call. What’s your take?
AM: Look, penalties are always debatable. It was a tangle in the box, and the referee saw enough to point to the spot. You’ve got to give credit to Tavernier; he’s ice-cold from 12 yards.
It’s a shame for Dortmund, though. They’re a club with huge potential, but they need to tighten up defensively.
Moving on to some of the other standout results.Porto scraped through with another draw against Lazio, while Leipzig overcame Real Sociedad in Spain.Sevilla also progressed despite a loss in Zagreb. Do any of these teams stand out as potential winners now?
AM: Porto always find a way, don’t they? They’re seasoned European campaigners. Leipzig are a dangerous team, especially with their attacking prowess, and Sevilla, well, they’ve got that winning mentality. It wouldn’t surprise me to see any of those teams go deep in this competition.
What about Atalanta? They looked notable against Braga, winning 3-0.
AM: Atalanta are a joy to watch. They play exciting, attacking football. They’re definitely one to keep an eye on.
We’ve got some real heavy hitters left in the competition now. As a seasoned pro,who are you tipping as the eventual Europa League champion?
AM: It’s wide open, really. There are several teams capable of lifting the trophy. Porto, Leipzig, Sevilla, Atalanta…even Rangers! We’ve got the experiance and the fighting spirit to go all the way.
