That was not enough! Borussia Dortmund missed the Euro miracle at Glasgow Rangers. After the 4-2 disaster in the first leg, a 2-2 draw in Glasgow is not enough to progress.
The club had such big goals. After third place in the Champions League, BVB boss Watzke had demanded the title win in December: “This is the title that Borussia Dortmund is still missing.”
But instead of winning the Europa League, Borussia made a fool of themselves against the Scots and were eliminated in the play-offs for the round of 16!
Mats Hummels on RTL: “Huge disappointment. We’re out of the Champions League group, which we can’t be kicked out of. Now out in the round, where we also have to progress. We know this. Sure, we had 100,000 injured. But we made too many big individual mistakes to progress, including me. Then things can also go wrong.”
BVB-Trainer Marco Rose: “There weren’t an incredible number of individual mistakes, but decisive individual mistakes. Jule comes a little too late in the penalty area, and Mats doesn’t hit the ball on purpose either. That continues throughout the season. The boys gave everything today. This home game simply cannot happen to us.”
After the end of the DFB Cup against second division team St. Pauli and six points behind Bayern in the Bundesliga, there will most likely be nothing with a title again!

Even without the ailing Erling Haaland, BVB briefly starts to catch up.
► 31. Minute: Bellingham gets shot in the box. Seven meters from the goal he is completely free in front of McGregor and slams the ball into the short corner. 1:1!
► 42nd minute: the outstanding Bellingham again! The Englishman lays out a hoe in the penalty area for Malen. From five meters he pokes the ball into the goal. 1:2!
The abolition of the away goals rule meant that only one goal was missing before extra time.
But then a major mistake by Mats Hummels ruins the race to catch up!

After that, Dortmund didn’t get enough to score two more goals for extra time. But they weren’t eliminated in Glasgow…
