Feliciano López and Stefanos Tsitsipas were proclaimed champions at the ATP 500 in Acapulco 2022, defeating Marcelo Arévalo and Jean-Julien Rojer (7-5, 6-4) in the final. The couple that has been most liked in Mexico this week, and with an unprecedented formation, leaves Juárez with the trophy in their hands, and as number 14 in the ranking of the Race to Turin.
Feliciano Lopez and Stefanos Tsitsipastraining couple in the last ATP 500 in Vienna, met for the first time in a final, and they did so against Marcelo Arevalo from El Salvador, and Jean-Julien Rojer from France, a much more accustomed couple than López and Tsitsipas, and who had already played tournaments together (including winning the ATP 250 in Dallas and the ATP 250 in Delray Beach). The most expert doubles player of all of them was the champion of Roland Garros 2016 together with Marc LopezFeliciano López, champion of other major tournaments such as Barcelona (also with Marc López) and Queen’s (with Andy Murray) previously. Even so, the good form of Arévalo and Rojer, and the lack of complicity of the couple formed by Stefanos and Feliciano (in their second event together), made the Salvadoran and French favorites.
Very serious match to get the crown
From the start of the match, it could be seen that Feliciano and Tsitsipas were prepared for whatever came from the other side of the net. In the second serve of the favorite couple, the Spanish-Greek duo broke their serve to go 2-1. Later, Arévalo and Rojer would recover for 3-3 and would have break balls and a set at 5-4. López and Tsitsipas would save them, and they would break with 5-5 and then close the first set with their serve for 7-5.
In the second set, the story would follow similar paths. In the third game of the partial, Feli and Stef would break, and would barely maintain that advantage until the end of the match. With the serve of Feliciano López, he and Tsitsipas were proclaimed champions in the Acapulco final with a final 6-4.
This is the first doubles title for Stefanos Tsitsipas (eighth in total) and the sixth for Feliciano López (thirteenth in total).
