Feyenoord Women 1 has won the second Rotterdam city derby. Excelsior Rotterdam was defeated 3-2. The decisive goal, which came from Maxime Bennink‘s foot, only came just before time. Due to this narrow victory, Feyenoord keeps in touch with the top in the Pure Energie Women’s Eredivisie.
The match at Varkenoord started with a special milestone. For the first time in fourteen weeks, a public was allowed to be present at a Feyenoord Women 1 match. All available tickets, one third of the total capacity, were sold out within a few days.
The start of the second Rotterdam city derby had to be postponed by fifteen minutes, because Excelsior had come to Varkenoord with a uniform that resembled Feyenoord’s too much. After new shirts had been arranged for the visitors, the kick-off could take place with some delay.
Fel
Feyenoord Women 1 continued from the start on the line that had been used in recent weeks. Danny Mulder’s team started the derby bright and sharp and put the women of Excelsior under full pressure. This paid off. Already in the sixth minute a beautiful through pass from Kim Hendriks ended up at Maxime Bennink, who brought the ball tight in front of the goal. Romée van de Lavoir was able to simply tap in and score her sixth goal of the season.
The opportunistic play of the home side was a delight for the audience present, but not always without risk. Excelsior could become dangerous a few times from the counter, but each time encountered Feyenoord keeper Jacintha Weimar. In minute 36 Maxime Bennink doubled the score and put the 2-0 halftime score on the board.
Second half
In the second half it was Excelsior that boldly took the initiative. Feyenoord seemed to be at a loss for the playing style of the visitors, which led to a messy phase. Half an hour before the end, Excelsior attacker Sabrine Ellouzi managed to find the net from close by, reducing the margin to one. Just before time it seemed to go wrong for Feyenoord. Excelsior equalized via Piqué and seemed to have a point left in the confrontation. Barely a minute later, just before the end of regular time, Maxime Bennink scored her second of the evening and an important winning goal. Final score: 3-2
