Formula 1 and Euroleague Respond to Ukraine Crisis

The global sporting community is taking a stand against the conflict in Ukraine, with both Formula 1 and the Euroleague basketball league announcing notable changes to their schedules and operations.

Formula 1 Cancels Russian Grand Prix

In a decisive move, the international Automobile Federation (FIA) has cancelled the 2022 Russian Grand Prix, originally slated for September 25th in Sochi. This decision comes amidst widespread condemnation of russia’s invasion of Ukraine and follows strong statements from several Formula 1 drivers, including four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and reigning champion Max Verstappen, who expressed their unwillingness to race in Russia.

The FIA emphasized its commitment to using Formula 1 as a platform for unity and peace, stating that “Formula 1 visits cities around the world with a positive vision of bringing people together, bringing all nations together.” The organization acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, “It is impossible to hold a grand prix in russia under the current circumstances. We are watching the advancement of the situation in Ukraine with sadness and shock, and with the hope of a rapid and peaceful resolution of the current situation.”

Euroleague Relocates Games Involving russian Teams

The Euroleague basketball league has also taken action, postponing the CSKA Moscow-Barcelona match scheduled for Sunday and relocating all upcoming games involving Russian teams against foreign opponents to neutral venues. This includes the highly anticipated clash between CSKA Moscow and Real Madrid, originally scheduled for March 4th.

The Euroleague, after consulting with all 18 participating clubs, has decided to suspend all matches on Russian soil for the foreseeable future, with the exception of two domestic matchups: Zenit-Unics Kazan on March 22nd and Zenit-CSKA on April 1st. The rescheduled game between Baskonia and Zenit Saint Petersburg will be played at a yet-to-be-persistent location and date.

In a statement, the Euroleague emphasized its commitment to the safety and well-being of all participants, stating, “The decisions have been made to protect the integrity of the competition, allowing teams to continue defending their right to compete on the field, isolating the sport from any political action.” The organization stressed its duty to ensure the safety of players, coaches, fans, and staff, adding that it will continue to monitor the situation and make necessary adjustments to its decisions as needed.

The Euroleague also issued a strong condemnation of the violence in Ukraine, stating, “The clubs remain united in their purpose to use the power of basketball to unite communities. Euroleague Basketball embraces and celebrates diversity, which is widely present in its communities and at the core of all teams. This diversity is understood to be deeply linked to the value of respect, promoting the free expression of different opinions. Violence of any kind is contrary to such values and is not tolerated or accepted as a way to defend anyone’s opinion or position.”
