Immobile during the “trade deadline” on Thursday evening, the Knicks responded on the floors, a few hours later, in Golden State. After four defeats in a row, the New York players have finally won, against one more cador, and after a big game.
A successful evening and total satisfaction. “It was a big victory, we finally had a good match together, it feels good”responded Julius Randle at a press conference.
The Knicks remained on four losses (seven in eight matches even), including three in a row outside since they are “road trip”. Tom Thibodeau is pleased to have, with his troops, well managed the “money time”.
“This victory is important, given our current situation, and I liked the determination of the group”says the coach. “The first meeting of the road trip, against the Lakers, we were good, but the game escaped us. Same thing in Utah, and we were bad in Denver. There, we were good and it feels good to win but we are already thinking about the next match. »
Evan Fournier, too, wants to highlight the mental qualities of the Knicks, to avoid another defeat which would have been very frustrating.
“We have a resilient group, we are tough”explains the French rear. “We have the right approach, we want to fight, we want to win, it’s as simple as that. We were aggressive, and unlike the matches against the Lakers and the Jazz, we were able to conclude, execute better offensively. It is played on one or two actions. It was not so different in the two matches I mentioned, but here we win. »
“He is more consistent, that’s the difference”
In addition to the victory, the other great satisfaction on the New York side is obviously the performance of Julius Randle. For three matches, he had averaged 30 points at 50% shooting success, but success was slow to come. There, he again made a solid performance with 28 points at 10/23 in shooting, 16 rebounds and 7 assists, losing only two balls, and New York won.
Slowly, and while he was in the hot seat and was heavily criticized by his audience, the former Pelicans seems to be entering his season and regaining his All-Star level from last year for a few days.
“He is more consistent, that’s the difference”analyse Evan Fournier. “One of the things that has changed, which he’s been doing for a few games, is when changing in defense, especially with me, he cuts very well towards the circle. I have insides on me and the defenders are trailing so when he goes to the circle I can find him and he has space to wrap up or find a 3-point shot for someone. Stephen Curry and Draymond Green do this all the time. We try to do the same together. He’s starting to do it very well. »
Against the Warriors, it was when he got closer to the circle that Julius Randle was effective. As soon as he tried his luck from distance, he missed, with only one basket scored outside the key. As soon as he simplifies his game, is sharp and goes to the basket, he is much better than when he forces at half distance or at 3-pts.
“I had to adapt to the way we were playing. We played with a high rhythm all season and we couldn’t evolve like that.notice the interior. “When he plays like that, he is the engine of the group”adds Tom Thibodeau. “He was very strong, just like Fournier. »
