Flood of medals for JCW juniors at district championships
Wermelskirchen Till Scheida’s hopes were fueled by an enormous flood of medals at the district championships: the final result was four district champions with gold, one silver, one bronze and one fifth place.
The garden party at the Borchardt family is traditionally held for youngsters from the Judo Club Wermelskirchen (JCW) to win at least two medals at the West German Championships. So coach Till Scheida asked the young athletes on the sidelines of the U15 district championships in Leverkusen: “So friends, which one of you will organize the garden party?”. In recent years, the athletes have mostly far exceeded this target with more than four medals, but staying overnight and doing something together was out of the question at the time. But things are slowly picking up speed again.
While the U18 and U21 championship series was moved to the second half of the year, the younger U15 competitors were allowed to compete in the district championship. The championship was canceled due to a lack of participants.

Phil Cabecana, who fought in the 80lb lightweight division, won every bout and secured the gold medal.
Julius Glaser competed up to 46 kg. With three premature victories and different techniques, he also fought for the top spot on the podium. Emma Becker taught fear to the competition up to 52 kg. Her trainer Kaweh Scheida was enthusiastic: “It was great to see how Emma intuitively turns out of dangerous counter-attacks and cleverly uses them to her advantage. You can see her outstanding judo talent there.”
Enrique Correia was in the small final after one win and one loss. Here he narrowly missed victory and qualification for the West German Championship.
Despite being underweight up to 33 kg, Julia Scheida fought for the silver medal and bought the ticket to West German. Ida von Grünberg and Hannah Glauner went up to 44 kg on the mat. In the end, Ida secured the bronze medal and her friend Hannah the gold. Both are allowed to compete at this year’s West German Championship in Dormagen.
