Football: Dortmund is stalking Bayern

Football: Dortmund is stalking Bayern

Both teams had to make up for a loss from the previous weekend. Union Berlin lost 2-0 in Augsburg, Dortmund even lost 5-2 at home to Bayer Leverkusen. BVB coach Marco Rose, who again had to do without his injured top striker Erling Haaland, therefore relied on more defensive stability and had asked the team to act differently.

In the decisive moments, Dortmund were wide awake and physically more robust than the home side around Union captain Christopher Trimmel, who was substituted in the 78th minute. After a rebound in the Berlin penalty area, Mahmoud Dahoud reacted quickly and played the ball into the path of captain Reus, who completed the 1-0 goal through the legs of Union keeper Andreas Luthe (18th minute).

Seven minutes later, Reus was back with great commitment. After a long ball, there was a duel between BVB attacker Donyell Malen and Union Bastian Oczipka. Both went down, Reus got the free ball, passed Union goalkeeper Andreas Luthe and pushed in. The 32-year-old’s first brace of the season.

Berliners slip from CL ranks

The Berliners, who also had to change five times due to several coronavirus cases, found it difficult from the start to deliver a game at the limit similar to the two previous Bundesliga home wins against Dortmund. Although BVB initially gave up control after the break and Union got into the duels better and increased the pressure, but Grischa Prömel (47′) and Sven Michel (65′) missed the goal clearly.

The final decision came in the 71st minute. Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham pointed the ball in the middle just before the baseline. Goalie Luthe was able to deflect a shot from Malen, but Guerreiro pushed in the rebound. For BVB it was the 35th goal of the season in the second half of the game – a shared high in the league with Bayern. While Dortmund underlined their role as the first Bayern hunters, the Berliners slipped out of the Champions League ranks and are now sixth.
