Marc Gual: Thank you for having me. It was terrifying. The sound of bombs exploding jolted me awake in the middle of the night. It was chaos. Everyone was confused,scared,not knowing what to do.

Marc Gual: The club president, a truly remarkable man, acted quickly. He opened his hotel to us, offering a safe haven from the shelling. It wasn’t much, but it was a lifeline in those first terrifying hours.
Were there other players, staff members, or families sheltering with you? Did you experience a sense of camaraderie during this time?
Marc Gual: Yes, many of us were huddled together. It was a mix of players, staff, and even some families of the players. We were all in this together. It fostered a sense of unity and support, which was crucial given the circumstances. We helped each other, shared information, and tried to keep each other’s spirits up.
The journey out of Ukraine must have been incredibly difficult. Can you share a glimpse into that experience?
Marc Gual: It was an ordeal. Over 24 hours of tense travel, navigating checkpoints, navigating ruined landscapes, and constantly fearing for our safety. It was exhausting, mentally and physically, but the desire to reach safety fueled us every step of the way.
What was going through your mind during that long journey?
Marc Gual: Honestly, it was a blur of emotions. Fear, adrenaline, hope, frustration, and a constant stream of thoughts about loved ones back home.
Your resilience is truly inspiring. What message do you have for people reading this, who may be watching the events unfold in Ukraine from afar?
Marc Gual: Never take peace for granted. Sometimes,we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget how fleeting it can be. We need to support each other, stand in solidarity with those suffering, and always work towards a more peaceful world.
Do you believe international sporting bodies have done enough to address the situation in Ukraine, considering the impact on athletes like yourself?
Marc Gual: it’s a complex issue. I appreciate the statements of solidarity and support from various organizations. However, concrete actions speak louder than words. I believe there’s more that can be done. Maybe by organizing aid initiatives, providing resources to displaced athletes, or even using the platform of sport to raise further awareness and put pressure on those responsible for this senseless conflict.
