The match against Standard started, where it ended at OH Leuven: with Genk dissatisfaction with an arbitral decision. This time, however, there was no discussion after looking at the VAR images: Onuachu was narrowly offside when he seemed to open the score after less than two minutes with his head.
Lots of pressure, no goals
It was the start of a great first half, in which Genk kept the opponent in a stranglehold through a lot of movement, careful football and pressure ahead. But it just went wrong for 43 minutes on both the last pass and the finish. Trésor, for example, aimed over the goal after a brilliant collective attack and McKenzie headed a corner kick from Trésor wide open. Bodart reacted alertly to attempts by Bongonda and Onuachu.
Standard rarely got around to combining, but did force three chances on the counter. However, Vandevoordt was not surprised, especially his rescue on a bang from Emond.
Bongonda at the stroke of rest
On the stroke of half-time, KRC Genk was rewarded for its attacking spirit. Thorstrvedt switched quickly after Liège lost the ball and found Trésor centrally, who found exactly the right moment to put Bongonda alone in front of the goal with a through pass. The active captain did not miss eye to eye with Bodart: 1-0. The visiting protest over Hrosovsky’s advance hands only resulted in a yellow card for Amallah.
Onuachu punishes Sissako for sleeping
Shortly after the break, the home team played with its luck for a while, but the infant Rouches failed to punish unnecessary loss of the ball. Paul Onuachu on the other side did. He stole the ball from a blundering Sissako, dodged the overrun Bodart and – and somewhat fortunately – aimed the ball through Laifis’ leg: 2-0.
Just like in the previous home games against Beerschot and Zulte Waregem, Genk seemed to take it a bit too easy with that double lead. This allowed Standard to enter the game unnecessarily. The victory was no longer in danger, thanks to a clever save by Vandevoordt during a breakthrough by Dragus. Another youth product also provided a bright spot, Luca Oyen once again made a difference with his dribbling and speed acceleration.
