The Latin America Amateur Championship, a recognized golf championship, started this Thursday and included the participation of several Peruvian representatives. One of the most outstanding national athletes on the first day of competition was Julián Périco, who is in eighth place (Top 6) in the general table.

During his initial appearance at the Casa de Campo de La Romana, located in the Dominican Republic, the golfer who defends the colors of Peru managed to finish his round with 69 strokes (-3). According to the classification of the event, he was tied in points with Mateo Fernández de Oliveira (Argentina), Bejamín Saiz-Wenz (Chile), Jerónimo Esteve (Puerto Rico) and Virgilio Paz Valdés (Venezuela).

It should be noted that Julián Périco is one of the most outstanding Peruvians in this discipline and even in 2020 he managed to make history: he entered the US Amateur match play table of the season and ended the 60-year drought without the presence of a representative of the ‘Blanquirroja’.

On the other hand, returning to LAAC 2022, the Argentine Segundo Oliva Pinto and the Puerto Rican Roberto Nieves are, for now, the participants with the best performance: both have 66 shots (-6). The distance in the placement table is minimal, so changes could take place until Sunday, when the tournament ends.

It is worth mentioning that the champion of the Latin America Amateur Championship will obtain an invitation to be present in the Masters Tournament and The Open Championship, in addition to the exemption from playing The Amateur, the US Amateur Championship or another USGA championship in which he is eligible. Meanwhile, the same winner and the athletes who occupy second place will access the final qualifying stage of The Open and the US Open.

How are other Peruvian athletes located?

Apart from Julián Périco, there are three other Peruvian golfers in competition: Eduardo Galdós is in the Top 56 with 76 shots (+4), Alejandro Ramos in the Top 64 with 75 shots (+5) and Erik Plenge in the Top 69. with 75 hits (+6). Everyone will have the opportunity to climb the table this Friday, when the second round is played (11:00 am in Peru).
