Golf: Scottie Scheffler wins a 1st tournament on the PGA

Scottsdale, Ariz. – Scottie Scheffler got the better of Ryder Cup teammate Patrick Cantlay on the third hole of overtime and triumphed Sunday at the Waste Management Open in Phoenix with a 25-yard putt just hard enough to fall into the bottom of the cup.

Cantlay then missed an 11-yard putt to confirm Scheffler’s victory.

Scheffler, 25, birdied on four of the last six holes to tie Cantlay. They finished 16 under (268 strokes) at the TPC Scottsdale Golf Club. Scheffler and Cantlay handed out cards of 67 on Sunday.

It was Scheffler’s first victory on the PGA Tour, on his 71st attempt.

Scheffler and Cantlay played par on the first two holes of overtime.

Scheffler, who was nine shots down going into the weekend, went 62 on Saturday and came within two shots of the point leader, Sahith Theegal.

Theegala, a rookie, lost his lead due to a bogey on the 17th pennant. The 24-year-old American turned in a 70 to conclude the tournament at 15 under. He tied for third with last year’s champion Brooks Koepka (69) and Xander Schauffele (68) one shot behind.

Theegala was trying to become the first guest player to win a tournament since Martin Laird at the Shriners Children’s Open in 2020.

Canadians Adam Hadwin and Corey Conners had tough days, finishing 26th and 38th respectively.

Hadwin was tied for 7th place heading into the match Sunday, but went 74 (plus-3) in the final round.

Conners, who was 29th after Saturday’s round, went 72 (plus-1) on Sunday.
