Goseong-gun (Gun-su Baekdu-hyeon) announced that the Madongho Wetland, where an endangered species inhabits, has been designated as a national wetland protection area.
The Madong Lake Wetland National Wetland Protection Area was designated as the 29th National Wetland Protected Area by the Ministry of Environment and the 6th in Gyeongnam.
The Madong Lake Wetland is home to 739 species of endangered species, natural monuments, and rare plants, and is highly valued for conservation as it is adjacent to the World Irrigation Cultural Heritage and National Agricultural Cultural Heritage ‘Dumbung’.
In particular, a wide reed field of 34 hectares, which is rare in the southern coast, is formed, and the natural scenery is excellent. In the surrounding waterfront section, sedimentary rock layers of the Mesozoic Era and fossil complexes of dinosaur footprints are distributed, which has geological importance.
Previously, 82% of the area of Madong Lake wetland was publicly owned, but 101 out of 115 lots were privately owned, so it was difficult to designate a wetland protected area without the consent of the residents.
Accordingly, the county delivered the necessity and importance of the wetland protection area through several meetings and briefings with residents, and was able to receive the designation of the wetland protection area thanks to the active consent and support of the residents.
In accordance with the Wetland Conservation Act this year, the county plans to apply for the state budget for wetland restoration and construction of a wetland conservation center, and to establish a resident council and resident monitoring group for the participation of nearby residents to promote the construction of a wetland trail and wetland conservation center.
Governor Baek Du-hyeon said, “I sincerely thank the citizens for their active cooperation so that Lake Madong, which is comparable to Suncheon Bay, can be designated as a national wetland protected area. In the future, we will strive to create Goseong, a carbon-neutral eco-friendly eco-city.”
