Two Friends, One Goal: Conquering the Raid Amazones in Sri Lanka
Margot Jeanson and Camille Mazier, united by a shared passion for handball and a commitment to inclusivity, are gearing up for an unusual adventure. This March, they will embark on the Raid Amazones 2022, a challenging ten-day expedition that blends athleticism with humanitarianism.
The Raid Amazones, celebrating its 20th anniversary, has chosen Sri Lanka as its destination for this special edition. For Margot and Camille, both first-time participants, this journey represents a unique prospect to push their limits while making a difference.
A Bond Forged in sport and Shared Values
Their friendship blossomed two years ago in a professional setting, quickly evolving into a strong bond fueled by their mutual love for handball. Both women are deeply committed to promoting sports accessibility for individuals with disabilities, a cause they champion through their team name, “Handiballeuses.”
Margot, a recruitment specialist, and Camille, a dedicated psychomotrician working with children, are actively involved with the CDH 65 (Departmental Handisports Committee of the Hautes-Pyrénées), an institution close to their hearts.
Embracing the Challenge
The Raid Amazones will test their physical and mental fortitude with a diverse range of activities, including running, cycling, archery, mountain biking, canoeing, and even treasure hunts. While their primary goal is to complete the challenge, they are determined to give it their all and support each other every step of the way.
Beyond the athletic challenges, the experience promises profound cultural immersion. Margot and Camille are eager to connect with the local community, learn about Sri Lankan culture, and share moments of genuine human connection. Their suitcases are packed not only with athletic gear but also with toys to bring joy to the children they encounter.
Overcoming Obstacles to Reach Their Dream
Participating in the Raid Amazones comes with a meaningful financial commitment. The €4,000 registration fee per person, coupled with personal expenses, required dedicated fundraising efforts.
“Securing sponsorships was definitely the most challenging aspect of our preparation,” admits Margot. Camille adds, “We even resorted to canvassing local businesses to gather the necessary funds.”
Despite the hurdles, their determination prevailed. with registration secured, they are now counting down the days until their departure on March 13th. After a pandemic-induced cancellation of the previous edition, their excitement is palpable.
While they acknowledge the potential for mosquito encounters, their enthusiasm outweighs any apprehension. For Margot and Camille, the Raid Amazones is more than just a competition; it’s a journey of self-finding,cultural exchange, and making a positive impact on the world.
