Iga Swiatek flies over the WTA 1000 final in Doha

Mobile, determined and precise, Iga Swiatek made short work of Anett Kontaveit on Saturday in the one-sided final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Doha (6-2, 6-0 in 1h04). The Pole thus put a superb end to an almost perfect week in Qatar, during which only the Swiss Viktorija Golubic (36th WTA) managed to take a set from her, in the first round (6-2, 3-6, 6-2).

After this complicated start, the world n°8 chained very clear successes over Daria Kasatkina (28th, 6-3, 6-0), Aryna Sabalenka (n°2, 6-2, 6-3), Maria Sakkari ( n°6, 6-4, 6-3) and, in the final, Anett Kontaveit (n°7, 6-2, 6-0). Semi-finalist at the Australian Open in January (stopped by Danielle Collins), Swiatek thus conquered the second WTA 1000 of her career, after Rome, last year, when she inflicted a 6-0, 6- 0 in the final to Karolina Pliskova.

Back to 4th place in the world

Champion of Roland-Garros 2020, the 20-year-old Polish woman now has four titles on the main circuit and has a favorable record against members of the top 10 since she has won 8 of her 15 duels against the elite… She also has an amazing record in the professional finals she has played in, all categories combined (ITF, WTA, Grand Slam), since she has won eleven out of twelve times!

This victory in Doha allows him to become world No. 4 again, his record. She could well send her racquet in the air after Kontaveit’s final foul on the volley: “Very happy to have been so solid because before the game, I thought it was almost impossible to beat Anett, given her results over the past few weeks. The score is a little harsh because there really was a fight. I would also like to express my support for all the people who are suffering in Ukraine. It is very emotional for me to see what is happening to a country neighboring mine. »
