It was the third match of coach Gustavo De Conti with the Brazilian team, and his first in the national team. The commander is 100% successful and the yellow-green team leads Group B of the American qualifiers with three wins, followed by Uruguay, who have two triumphs and this Friday suffered their first defeat in qualifying.
The scorers for Franca’s challenge, which once again hosted an official match for the Selection after nearly four decades, were point guard Vitor Benite and winger Léo Meindl, both with 13 points. Point guard Yago also stood out, with 11 points and seven assists. Among the Uruguayans, playmaker Luciano Parodi, formerly of Franca and Corinthians, scored 12 points.
Gustavo De Conti’s team will play again this Monday, again at Pedrocão, but this time against Colombia, last of the group. The departure will be at 20:00.
Brazil started the duel with a quintet well known to Franca fans, with Vitor Benite, Léo Meindl, Georginho, Lucas Dias and Lucas Mariano – Franca Basquete’s last three players and the first two with stints at the club.
But another former Franca, only Uruguayan, the point guard Luciano Parodi got off to a great start. Although the defenses were superior to the attacks in the first quarter, Parodi commanded the celestial team in attack and scored ten of the team’s 14 points. Brazil also scored 14 points, but always contested on offense, with only 33% of hits on two-point shots.
The Brazilians managed to hit the offensive sector by accelerating the defense throughout the pitch. In the quick transition game, Seleção managed to open the lead, highlighting a beautiful counter attack started by Léo Meindl and ended with a dunk by Lucas Dias, two minutes from the end. Over there, in the lane, the highlight was Lucão, with two walls that turned into a counterattack. So the Giallorossi ended the first half with the advantage: 37 to 31.
The Brazilian team improved their scoring even more and limited the celestial team to 11 points in the period. With Rafa Mineiro, Hettsheimeir, Lucas Dias, Lucão and Georginho a higher quintet, Brazil made things even more difficult for the Uruguayans and hit Parodi, who scored zero in the third quarter. From the defense, the attack took off. Even with 29% of threes, the team recovered in offensive rebounds and extended their lead: 55 to 43.
The last period consolidated the Brazilian leadership and coach Gustavinho took the opportunity to rotate the entire squad, with the addition of Elinho and Gui Deodato, who had not played this Friday until then. Léo Meindl, Benite and Yago shared the score, in a strong collective offensive game. With no chance of reaching the hosts on the scoreboard, Uruguay slowed down in the final minutes, as did Brazil, which took their third win in the competition and sent the leaderboard to the second qualifying round.
