In what year was baseball invented? history and origin

Mexico City /

Baseball had its beginnings in the early 19th century in the United States. The main basis of the ‘King of Sports’ were cricket and rounders, games in which two teams face each other using a kind of bat and a ball.

Variations of those sports began to be played both in schools and in the backyards of houses in some industrialized cities in the United States.

But it was in September 1845 that baseball began to take shape when a group of men founded the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club. One of the members of that team, the firefighter and bank employee, Alexander Joy Cartwrightthen created the first rules to practice this sport.

From that moment, with these new rules, baseball began to separate itself from the sports with which it was initially compared, to develop its own style and history.

Once the rules were accepted, it was in 1846 when the first official baseball game was held, when the Knickerbockers to a cricket team.

There were several rules with which baseball began, many of them have been modified throughout history but these are the ones that have remained until now:

  • Four bases set in a square
  • The bases are 90 feet apart from each other.
  • Balls batted off first and third base are foul.
  • Three outs are considered to end an inning
  • Teams play a total of nine innings
  • The batter must receive three strikes to be considered out.
  • On the third missed swing, the batter may run to first base if the catcher does not catch the ball and may reach base if the catcher does not throw.
  • Runners can be put out if they are tagged with the ball in play or forced on the bases (for example a double play).
