Welcome, Jonathan. Congratulations on this well-deserved honour from the PWKI. It’s truly inspiring to see an athlete using their platform to make a difference beyond the sporting arena.
Thank you. It’s an honor to be recognized by the PWKI. The Lombok earthquake was a tragedy that deeply affected me. seeing firsthand the devastation and the spirit of the Lombok people, irrespective of their faith, ignited a desire in me to contribute to their healing and rebuilding.
Yoru generosity extended to both churches and mosques, which speaks volumes about your commitment to interfaith harmony. In a world frequently enough marked by division, your actions are a powerful testament to unity.
for me, faith is about love, compassion, and service. Lombok needed healing, and it didn’t matter what faith people held. Everyone suffered, and everyone deserved support. Rebuilding both churches and mosques was a way of symbolizing our shared humanity and the power of collective healing.
Do you see yourself as a role model, particularly for young Indonesians?
I don’t necessarily see myself as a role model, but if my actions inspire even one person to be more compassionate and act with kindness towards others, then I’m fulfilled. Young people have the power to make a real difference, and I hope they see that regardless of their passions or talents, they too can contribute to a better world.
How do you balance your demanding training schedule with your philanthropic endeavors?
Honestly, it’s a constant juggling act, but it’s something I’m passionate about. When I see the smiles on the faces of the people I help, it motivates me to push harder both on and off the court. It’s a reminder that there’s more to life than just winning medals.
What advice would you give to aspiring athletes who also want to make a difference in their communities?
find a cause that resonates with you. Whether it’s fighting poverty, promoting education, or advocating for environmental protection, there are countless ways to contribute.Even small acts of kindness can have a ripple effect. Don’t underestimate the power of your voice and actions.
Jonathan, thank you for your time and for sharing your perspective. Your actions are a powerful reminder that champions are made both on and off the court.
