While conventional powerhouses like Jharkhand have long dominated the sport, the recent results indicate a shift in the landscape.Shooters from Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan are now making their presence felt, securing top positions in the medal tally.

This surge in talent from diverse regions is a positive sign for the future of archery in India. As Sanjeeva Kumar Singh, Director of High Performance at the Archery Association of India, aptly noted, “it’s encouraging to see archery expanding beyond its traditional strongholds.Previously, the sport was largely confined to a few districts, with Jharkhand being the primary centre. This trend is changing, with archers from Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan showcasing their prowess at the recent Semi Junior national Championships.”

This diversification is fueled by the establishment of numerous shooting training centers across northern India, particularly in Haryana and Punjab. Rajasthan has also emerged as a new breeding ground for archery talent.

Patiala in Punjab has become a prominent archery hub, while Maharashtra boasts thriving centers in Pune, Amravati, and Ahmednagar, according to a national trainer. This widespread advancement of training infrastructure is directly contributing to the rise of new archery powerhouses.

“The training centers in states like Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan are nurturing a new generation of archers,” the national trainer explained. “As more centers emerge across the country,Jharkhand’s dominance is gradually diminishing.”

The Amravati Junior National Championships, held in early November, provided further evidence of this shift. maharashtra dominated the pool events, while athletes from North India secured medals in the recurring event, an Olympic discipline.

Parth Sunil Kord, a composite archer from Maharashtra, exemplified this new wave of talent, clinching four gold medals, including a mixed team gold, at the 38th Junior National Championships.

Historically, Jharkhand shooters and the Pune Army Sports Institute (ASI) held a firm grip on junior archery. However,the landscape is evolving.
