Jimmy Garoppolo is ready to leave the San Francisco 49ersand a team source believes that could happen much sooner than fans imagine.
Whatever happens, San Francisco is ready for an active postseason. The future of stars like wide receiver Deebo Samuel and defensive end Nick Bosa must be determined with contracts; there are free agents like offensive linemen Daniel Brunskill and Laken Tomlinson to tackle, along with other moves the Niners want to do.
All of those things take away cap space, and San Francisco doesn’t have much. In fact, Spotrac He maintains that the team only has $2.95 million to work with to date. Taking Garoppolo off the books should free up $25.55 million, which would go a long way toward bringing those other moves to fruition.
Athletic journalist Tim Kawakami he believes the context indicates that San Francisco will complete the deal by the end of February. Nothing official can happen until March 16, but the 49ers insider thinks the team’s deal will be reported within the week.
“But I think both the 49ers and Garoppolo are interested in clear the way relatively quickly,” Kawakami wrote. “Lynch and Shanahan will want maximum value for Garoppolo, which could extend the negotiations, but I think they know a bidding war is unlikely; they have to understand that further delay could make it appear that they are hesitant to bet entirely on [el quarterback Trey] Lance.”
The 49ers do the right thing with Garoppolo
Kawakami noted that part of the 49ers’ drive to move quickly is that they want to do the right thing with Jimmy G. The 30-year-old quarterback isn’t leaving on bad terms, and that means taking him wherever he wants to be.
Also, there is precedent for a February deal, as Kawakami’s article references the situation with Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick in 2013.
“The 49ers want to do the right thing with Garoppolo and that means sending him wherever he wants to go and doing it before all the good spots are already taken,” he wrote. Kawakami. “When the 49ers traded Alex Smith to the Chiefs in the 2013 postseason, after Colin Kaepernick led the team to the previous Super Bowl, they agreed to the deal in late February. Back then, the 49ers wanted to do the right thing with Smith, and they didn’t want there to be any confusion about Kaepernick as their starter.”
The parallel between that pass and the current panorama in San Francisco is almost unusual. Being in a position to trade valuable quarterbacks is never a bad thing, and the 49ers can benefit from that once again.
Jimmy G is working with 49ers
When Garoppolo spoke to the media on Feb. 1 after the Niners’ 20-17 loss in the NFC Championship game, he revealed that he and general manager John Lynch are working together on their future.
Considering that many passes or exits in the NFL are not always given on good terms, it was encouraging for the fans see Jimmy G look at least satisfied.
“I was talking to John [Lynch] the other day about finding the right destination,” Garoppolo said at the farewell press conference. “I just want to go to a place where they want to win.”
That’s a simple and fair request from the quarterback. Now depends on san francisco achieve it and move on to the next phase of the offseason.
