Armands Seņkāns (“3×3 Jelgava”) and Liza Čumika (“RSU”) received the titles of the most valuable players.
The “Open” tour of the Latvian Basketball Union (LBS) started on February 5 in Ropaži, when “3×3 Jelgava” won the competition of a total of 14 teams from Latvia, Lithuania and Germany, with the German “Düsseldorf LFDY” and “MSA” also joining the winners. In the second stage, a total of 12 men’s units from Latvia and Lithuania went to the fight, but in the first tournament, three quartets competed for the women’s strength.
LBS “Open” with the first number was shown in BC “Jelgava” with the champions of the Tokyo Olympic Games Edgars Krūmiņš. Together with Krūmiņš, Jānis Bērziņš, Kaspars Neimanis and Uldis Feldmanis participated in the competition. According to the FIBA rank, “MSA” (Artūrs Kramiņš, Lauris Bērziņš, Niks Niklāvs Višņevičs, Reinis Otersons), “3×3 Jelgava” (Armands Ginters, Armands Seņkāns, Kristaps Pļavnieks, Mārtiņš Šteinbergs) and “Baux” Jānis Ābols, Edgars Lācis, Mārcis Osis, Nikita Kuznetsov). Lithuanian “Candyshop” was displayed with the fifth issue.
In the sub-group tournament, three of the favorites proved their status by winning the rivals. Only “Candyshop” managed to play the highest-ranked Ādaži team, winning overtime with 22:19. The winners of all four sub-groups successfully crossed the threshold of the quarter-finals, entering the top four quartets. Both Jelgava units won the semi-finals. “BK Jelgava” beat the guests from Lithuania with 21:13, but the champion of the first stage of LBS “Open” “3×3 Jelgava” defeated “MSA” with 21:16, but Ginter was left without a wrist injury before the decisive fight.
In the game for the 3rd place “MSA” with 21:19 won the “Candyshop”. Otersons and Višņevičs scored seven points in favor of the Latvian Quartet.
The final “3×3 in Jelgava, playing without changes, was very convincing and defeated the team members with 21: 9. .
The most successful player in the men’s tournament was Krūmiņš, who scored a total of 38 points in five games, ahead of MVP Prize winner Senkan (36 points in five matches). Third place in the list was shared by Vishnevicius and Candyshop attack leader Jon Levicks (35 points in five games).
“RSU” 3×3 basketball players remained unbeaten in the competition of three women’s teams – Alise Bruzinska, Anita Megija Miķelsone, Ieva Stefānija Jundase, Liza Čumika. In the final, they beat the representatives of “Jugla” with 21: 5. Čumika and Miķelsone scored nine points in the final. In the tournament, the most productive was Miķelsone – 28 points in three matches.
Three more stages are planned in the LBS “Open” tour, in which both men’s and women’s teams will compete not only for places, but also for the points of participation in the final on May 8 in Saldus. The next stages of the tour will take place in Madona (March 20), Ventspils (April 10) and Kandava (April 24).
The winners of the prize have been taken care of by the supporters of the tour – LBS, “Sportland”, construction company “Restaurators”, Kandava cafe “Pie Kristapa”, “Kandava kart track”. The winners of the Jelgava tournament received invitations to the 2023 World Cup qualifying game Latvia-Belgium on February 28 at the Arena Riga.
