Leeds United sack Marcelo Bielsa after being brushed by Tottenham
Leeds

After Marcelo Bielsa’s journey as manager of Leeds United. The Argentinean was sacked following the Whites’ poor performance this season.

Bielsa, 66, was the main actor in Leeds’ success in promotion to the Premier League in 2020 after a 16-year absence. Last season, Patrick Bamford et al managed to finish in ninth position with 59 points.

But this season, Leeds’ performance has fallen. They have only won 5 of 26 matches, and have lost 13 times. Leeds are now in 16th position in the Premier League standings with 23 points.

Not only that, this season Leeds are the team with the most number of goals conceded, namely 60 goals, beating Norwich City (55 goals) at the bottom of the standings. Their recent performance was pathetic.

Leeds lost 4 times in a row in the Premier League, scoring only 2 goals and conceding 17 times. Most recently, they brushed Tottenham Hotspur 0-4. Management also decided there had to be changes to save Leeds from the threat of relegation.

“This is the most difficult decision for me as long as I lead Leeds United, given the success that Marcelo has given to this club,” said Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani of Bielsa’s sacking, as quoted by the BBC.

“With Marcelo as our coach, the team has had three great seasons and good times come back to Elland Road. He changed the culture of this club and brought us a winning mentality.”

“But I have to make a decision for the good of the club and I believe changes need to be made to secure a place in the Premier League next season. Recent results have not lived up to our expectations.”

“Our position in the league is now quite precarious and I feel it is time to bring in a new coach to make a real impact in the remainder of this decisive season,” explained Radrizzani.

Bielsa becomes the ninth manager in the Premier League to lose his job in the middle of the season. Former RB Leipzig coach from the United States, Jesse Marsch is said to be his replacement at Leeds.
