The Lithuanian men’s basketball team punched their ticket to the next round of the 2023 FIBA World Cup qualifiers with a resounding 77-56 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday. Playing in front of their home crowd in Vilnius, Lithuania showcased their dominance throughout the game, outscoring Bosnia and Herzegovina in three out of four quarters.
Tomas Dimša led the Lithuanian charge with an extraordinary 19 points,while David Gailius added 15 points to the scoreboard. France also secured their spot in the next round with a convincing 69-56 win over Portugal. M’Baye led the French scoring with 16 points, while Man Francisco chipped in with 15. Rafael Lisboa was Portugal’s top scorer with 14 points.
In the same group, Hungary emerged victorious against Montenegro, 88-84. David Vojvoda led the Hungarian offense with 24 points, while Zoltan Perls added 19. Justin Kobs paced Montenegro with 21 points, while Vladimir Mikhailovich contributed 18.
France currently leads Group E with a perfect 4-0 record, followed by Montenegro and Hungary with 2 wins each. Portugal remains winless after four games.
Simultaneously occurring, Georgia secured their place in the next round alongside Spain with a 79-65 victory over North Macedonia. Tadeus Macfeiden led Georgia with 24 points, while Nenad Dimitrijevic scored 25 points for North Macedonia, along with seven rebounds and eight turnovers.
Due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Ukrainian team, coached by Ainars Bagatskis, was unable to play their scheduled match against Spain.
In Group G, Georgia and Spain lead with four and three wins respectively. Ukraine has secured one victory in three games, while North Macedonia remains winless after four matches.

Italy defeated Iceland 95-87, with Amedeo Della Valle leading the Italian scoring with 26 points. Elvars Fridriksons was Iceland’s top scorer with 30 points.
The Dutch team refused to play their scheduled match against Russia, citing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The first round of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers features 32 European teams divided into eight groups of four. Each team plays each other twice, once at home and once away. The games are spread across three windows: November 20-30, 2021, February 21 – March 1, 2022, and June 27 – July 5, 2022.
the top three teams from each group will advance to the second round, where they will play six more games. This round will take place in three windows: August 22-30, November 7-15, and February 20-28, 2023.
The three strongest teams from each of the four groups in the second round will qualify for the World Cup finals. A total of 12 European teams will earn a spot in the World Cup.
The 2023 FIBA World Cup finals will be held in Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines in September 2023.
