Javier Lliso and Thibault Magnin could not qualify this Tuesday for the final of slopestyle of acrobatic skiing, occupying positions 14 and 29 respectively in the qualifications, when only the first twelve will continue in competition on Wednesday. It was not the day of the Spanish. Neither was able to iron the rounds as planned in the qualifying. Both the man from Madrid and the Majorcan came to this test with confidence. The training sessions couldn’t have gone better and they were ready to give it their all. However, nothing turned out as expected.
Lliso, who had been sixth and had obtained an Olympic diploma in big air, achieved a score of 69.16 in his second ‘run’, which was not enough for him to reach the final, after a fall.
The man from Madrid fell in the first of the three big jumps and his first attempt was barely valued at 21.95 points. In the second he was able to complete the round, but he couldn’t execute it perfectly and a couple of doubtful movements led him to that 69.16, insufficient to be in the coveted final.
For its part, Thibault Magnin, born in Switzerland and whose mother is Spanish, was in last position among the participants, with 33.06 points. He got them on the first try, in which he didn’t manage to perfectly execute the round he had prepared. The Mallorcan fell on the second rail and could not finish the second round, finishing last in the qualifying round with the score obtained in the first attempt.
Andri Ragettli dominated the qualifications, a few hours after the gold of his compatriot Mathilde Gremaud in the women’s category of the same discipline. With a score of 85.08, the 23-year-old Swiss, current world champion, beat Norwegian Birk Ruud (83.96 points), already a gold medalist in big air last week in Beijing.
American Nicholas Goepper, Olympic slopestyle runner-up four years ago in Pyeongchang, finished third in the qualifications (82.51 points).
The final will take place on Wednesday en el snowpark de Zhangjiakou.
