Marcos Sánchez (León, 63 years old) has been the new president of Club Deportivo Covadonga since Tuesday, replacing Curro Cabal, who left office after almost six years. Although he never held managerial positions until now, Sánchez has had a close relationship with Covadonga since 2006, when he began sponsoring the jerseys of various club teams with his construction company.
“Curro and his board of directors set the bar very high,” says Marcos Sánchez to explain that he feels privileged by the inheritance received, both in sporting and economic terms. Perhaps for this reason, the new president of Covadonga points out that, at least in these first months until the end of the current season, everything will remain the same. From there, according to his directors, he will begin to plan the future of a club that stands out for its quarry model, with more than six hundred federative records.
Sánchez arrived in Asturias for work reasons and his relationship with Covadonga began when one of his sons joined one of the club’s youth teams. He became a partner and began to collaborate financially during Miguel Rico’s stage in the presidency, “when times were not so good.” But theirs went beyond a commercial relationship, since “I had acquaintances in the board and I always liked how the club worked.”
Those close people were the ones who encouraged him to run for the presidency of the Cova: “They started telling me half jokingly two years ago, but I didn’t even contemplate it. I have a very good relationship with Curro Cabal and I thank him for how much he did for the club”. For this reason, only when the previous president made it very clear that his stage was over did he decide to step forward: “If there had been another candidate, I would not have presented myself. I didn’t want to go to elections.”
The immediate objective of Marcos Sánchez is to ensure the permanence of the first team in the Third RFEF, which is in danger due to the possibility of dragging down Asturian teams from the Second RFEF. In any case, the new president is clear that in one category or another “it will be necessary to use the quarry”. On the continuity of Fermín Álvarez, a basic piece in the club’s gear, Sánchez refers to conversations at the end of the season.
Regarding the conflict that arose with the members of the women’s team, at war with the previous board of directors for considering that they were discriminated against with respect to other sections of the club, Marcos Sánchez is also in favor of waiting for the end of the campaign: “The league ends immediately, in March, and from then on we will have to sit down and talk. For now everything will continue as it is and then we’ll see why nobody likes to see the club involved in these controversies”.
