Mario Basler became European champion and German champion several times – in the future the ex-national player will now be on the sidelines in the district league.

Former German national player Mario Basler will train district league club SC Türkgücü Osnabrück for a year and a half starting next Tuesday. This was confirmed by Samet Sakinmaz, sports director of the club from district league C kicker.

“The boys are happy, they can still learn a lot from Basler,” said Sakinmaz. The reason for Basler’s commitment to Türkgücü is a squash match lost by the 1996 European champion against a friend who is a member of the Osnabrück club. The bet was previously that Basler would become the new coach at Türkgücü if he lost the game.

Mario Basler should lead Türkgücü Osnabrück to promotion

Basler, whose center of life is now in Osnabrück, is now keeping his word. The goal under the former Bayern star is promotion to the district league, in district league C Türkgücü is currently in second place with good prospects.

According to sports director Sakinmaz, the previous coach Ali Ucar will from now on act as Basler’s “right hand”.

In his professional career, which he ended in 2004, Basler played a total of 262 Bundesliga games for 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Werder Bremen and FC Bayern. In addition, the former midfielder made 30 appearances for the DFB team.

The 53-year-old has worked as a coach for Jahn Regensburg, Eintracht Trier, Wacker Burghausen and Rot-Weiss Oberhausen to date. Most recently, Basler coached the Rot-Weiss Frankfurt association league from October to December 2017.
