Welcome back, sports fans! Today, we have the absolute honor of sitting down with Ayşe Şensoy, an inspirational Paralympian and former member of the Turkish National Wheelchair Basketball Team. Ayşe, thanks so much for joining us.
Ayşe: It’s a pleasure to be here!
Let’s jump right into it. We recently witnessed a remarkable victory by the Mus physically Disabled Youth and Sports Club in wheelchair basketball,a resounding win against Gaziantepspor Club without Barriers. What are your thoughts on this momentous win and the growing popularity of wheelchair basketball in Turkey?
Ayşe: It’s fantastic to see the sport gaining traction in Turkey. The Mus team’s victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the athletes, and it’s inspiring to witness the increasing support – both from fans and official figures – for inclusive sports. Having such a strong showing on the court helps raise awareness and breaks down stereotypes surrounding disability, showing that athletes with disabilities are just as competitive and passionate as their able-bodied counterparts.
Absolutely! The article also highlights the presence of prominent local leaders at the match, signaling the critically important importance placed on inclusive sports. Do you think this government support translates into tangible benefits for athletes and accessibility in sports facilities?
Ayşe: I definitely see a positive shift. Increased visibility from government officials helps ensure funding and resources are directed towards developing infrastructure and programs that cater to athletes with disabilities. It also sends a powerful message of inclusion and encourages wider societal acceptance. However, ther’s always room for improvement. We need to ensure that this support is consistent and translated into tangible actions like accessible facilities, specialized training programs, and talent identification initiatives that reach underserved communities.
That’s an vital point. Accessibility is often a key barrier. What are some of the biggest challenges wheelchair basketball players face in Turkey, and how can we address them?
Ayşe: One of the major hurdles is the lack of accessible sports facilities. Many gyms and courts aren’t equipped to accommodate wheelchairs, limiting training opportunities and participation. Transportation also poses a significant challenge, especially for athletes living in rural areas. Addressing these infrastructural issues is crucial to ensure equal opportunities and allow athletes to reach their full potential.
You raise a vital point. do you think there are enough opportunities for young people with disabilities to get involved in wheelchair basketball in Turkey?
Ayşe: We’ve made significant strides, but there’s still a long way to go. We need to make sure that data about wheelchair basketball reaches schools and communities, and that local clubs are equipped to welcome players of all levels.
What advice would you give to young aspiring wheelchair basketball players?

Never underestimate your capabilities. Wheelchair basketball is a demanding but incredibly rewarding sport. Hard work, dedication, and a strong support system are key to success.
