After a 2021 season hampered by injuries,Nadal’s phenomenal start to 2022,with 14 consecutive wins adn a potential fourth Acapulco title within reach, begs the question: is the King of Clay back on top? To discuss this incredible resurgence,I’m joined by the legendary Martina Navratilova,18-time Grand Slam singles champion and tennis icon.
Welcome, Martina! What are your thoughts on Nadal’s extraordinary start to the year?
Martina: Well, it’s certainly been a remarkable turnaround. we all know Nadal’s battled injuries, and frankly, ther were doubts about how he would perform coming back. But this level of dominance, especially against a player like Medvedev, who’s number one in the world and a truly formidable opponent, is astounding.
Do you think this win over Medvedev is a statement? Does it mark Nadal reclaiming his spot at the top of men’s tennis?
Martina: It’s definitely a statement win, there’s no doubt whatsoever about it. Medvedev’s a tough customer, and Nadal dismantled him. We saw that signature intensity, the relentless baseline game, and, importantly, the mental fortitude that’s always been his hallmark. Is it enough to say he’s back on top definitively? I think it’s too soon to declare that. the clay court season is coming up, which is Nadal’s domain, and that will be the true test.
Interesting point. Let’s talk about the Acapulco final.Cameron Norrie is no pushover, having just won in Delray Beach. What do you make of this matchup?
Martina: Norrie’s certainly improved in leaps and bounds. He’s a crafty player, and his win over Tsitsipas was impressive. But Nadal looked untouchable against Medvedev. I expect Nadal to be a heavy favorite, but Norrie will make him earn it. It’ll be exciting to see how Norrie tries to adapt his game against nadal’s relentless pressure.
What about Nadal’s statement that “his level of tennis is very high” regarding Norrie? Do you agree with Nadal’s assessment of his opponent?
Martina: Absolutely. Norrie’s playing with confidence, and his recent performances solidify Nadal’s point. Nadal’s never one to underestimate an opponent, and acknowledging Norrie’s game shows his respect.

Martina: Nadal’s mental fortitude is legendary.he’s one of the most mentally tough players I’ve ever seen. It’s that combination of unwavering belief in himself, his incredible work ethic, and a ruthless determination to win every point.
With Wimbledon and the U.S Open looming, do you think Nadal can add to his Grand Slam tally this year?
Martina: given his current form, you’d have to say he’s a serious contender for all the Grand Slams. Wimbledon will be a different challenge on grass, but if he keeps playing at this level, he can win anywhere.
