Nadal Triumphs Again, Setting Sights on 91st Title
Rafael Nadal continued his dominant start to 2022, defeating Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals of the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco. This victory sets up a final clash against Cameron Norrie, who is also enjoying a stellar year.
nadal, currently ranked fifth in the world, secured a 6-3, 6-3 win over Medvedev in just over two hours. While the scoreline suggests a comfortable victory, the second set proved to be a much tighter affair. Nadal had to fend off seven break points, showcasing his resilience and determination. Medvedev, despite his aggressive play, struggled to convert his opportunities, ultimately succumbing to a series of unforced errors, including a seventh double fault.
this win marks Nadal’s 14th consecutive victory this year, maintaining his undefeated streak. He will now aim for his 91st career title and his fourth Acapulco crown.
Medvedev’s Consolation: Ascending to World No. 1

Nadal vs. Norrie: A Battle of Titans Brewing in Acapulco!
Welcome back, tennis aficionados, to another riveting edition of ‘Inside the Baseline’! I’m your host, John Miller, and today we’re discussing the electrifying final showdown brewing in Acapulco between two titans of the court: the legendary Rafael Nadal and the surging cameron Norrie.
Joining me today is a true legend of the sport, four-time Grand Slam champion, and Wimbledon finalist, Pat Cash. Pat, thanks for joining us and lending your expert insights.
Pat Cash: Thanks for having me, John. This acapulco final is shaping up to be a treat!
John: Absolutely, Pat. Nadal, as always, is a force to be reckoned with. He’s on a monumental 14-match winning streak this year [[1]], and his dominance in Acapulco is well-documented. He’s going for his fourth title here. What are your thoughts on Nadal’s current form?
Pat Cash: Rafa is Rafa. He’s playing with the intensity and determination that has defined his career.
Even against Medvedev, he showed that grit, saving those crucial break points and finding a way to win.
His experience in big finals will be a huge asset. Though, I wouldn’t count Norrie out just yet. This young man is playing with a confidence I haven’t seen before.
He’s honed his game, and those impressive wins against Tsitsipas and last week in Delray Beach are testament to that.
John: That’s a great point,Pat. Norrie has been on fire this year, with an eight-match winning streak of his own. He’s clearly matured into a top-tier player. Nadal admitted himself that Norrie poses a “big challenge” [[1]]. Can Norrie actually pull off the upset?
Pat cash: It’s a tall order for sure, John. Nadal has beaten Norrie in all three of their previous encounters. But this is a different Norrie, with a newfound belief in himself. If he can dictate the pace of the match, stay consistent, and hold his nerve – which he’s shown he can do lately – he can definitely give nadal a run for his money.
John: We’ve also witnessed another exciting advancement this week – the rise of Medvedev to the world No.1 spot after a long reign by Novak Djokovic.
Do you think this will add any extra pressure for Medvedev heading into the French Open?
Pat Cash: I don’t think so, John.Medvedev seems to thrive under pressure, and this achievement will only boost his confidence going into clay season.
However, the mental hurdle of facing Nadal at Roland Garros is something else entirely. We all know how dominant Rafa is on clay.
Medvedev will need to find a way to adapt his game, play strategically, and hope Nadal isn’t at his absolute best.
Having mentioned that, Djokovic’s reign has ended, a new era is beginning, and this is exciting for the sport!
John: Absolutely, Pat. It’ll be captivating to see how this all unfolds.
