“I’ve always been a big fan of winter transfers. That brings a breath of fresh air to the team.”, said Julian Nagelsmann in mid-January. However, the FC Bayern coach did not get any new players in the winter transfer window – although he apparently had specific wishes.
Great solution for rear right
As the ‘Bild’ podcast ‘Bayern-Insider’ shows, the 34-year-old had a big solution in mind for the right-back position. Nagelsmann is a fan of João Cancelo from Manchester City. The 27-year-old Portuguese is a regular under Pep Guardiola.
And that’s where the problem lies: City won’t let an important player go for little money – especially not in winter. In the meantime, the subject of cancellation in Munich has been settled anyway. The tech-savvy right-footer extended until 2027 at the beginning of February.
Juve strikes at Zakaria
Nagelsmann’s second preferred winter player is now off the market. Bayern tried to get Denis Zakaria, but preferred a free transfer in the summer. Juventus Turin was quicker and immediately took the flexible defender from Borussia Mönchengladbach for 8.6 million euros.
According to ‘Bild’, Nagelsmann would have liked to have Zakaria in the squad and therefore even spoke to the 25-year-old Swiss himself – unsuccessfully, as we now know. In Turin, Zakaria now has a contract until 2026 and made a good start there with a goal in his debut against Hellas Verona (2-0).
