Sunday Night Hoops: A Chat with Coach Stan Van Gundy
It’s shaping up to be a monster eight-game Sunday in the NBA, and we’ve got former coach Stan Van Gundy here to break it all down. Coach Van Gundy, thanks for joining us!
Stan Van Gundy: My pleasure.Eight games on a Sunday? That’s what I like to see! It’s going to be a busy night for fans.
Absolutely, and one of the most anticipated games is the Sixers versus the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. What do you make of Philly’s early success with Embiid and Harden? Can they maintain it?
SV: Look, Embiid and Harden are two of the most talented players in the league. When they’re on, they’re almost unstoppable. But the real question is, can they stay healthy and committed? We saw glimpses of thier potential last year, but consistency is key. The Knicks, on the other hand, are tough. They’re playing with a lot of grit and pride. This game could go either way.
Speaking about teams finding their groove, the Celtics have been on a tear. Do you think they’ll cruise past the Pacers or could we see an upset?
SV: Boston’s been playing really well. Tatum’s taken another step forward, and their defense has been suffocating. The Pacers are scrappy, but I don’t think they have the firepower to keep up. I’d be surprised if this one is close.
Moving west, the Suns face a challenge against the Jazz without Chris Paul. How do you see that game playing out?
SV: Losing CP3 is a huge blow, but the Suns are deep.Booker can carry the load, and Ayton needs to step up big time. The Jazz are a risky team. Mitchell and Gobert can be a nightmare to defend. I expect a tight game, but if the Suns can get their big guys involved, they have a shot.
And then there’s the late-night showdown between the Warriors and the Mavericks. Luka Doncic against Steph Curry – that’s a matchup for the ages. Who takes it?
SV: This is the game I’m most excited about. Two generational talents going head-to-head. You know Curry will put on a show, but Luka’s ability to create his own shot and involve his teammates is something special. I’m giving the slight edge to dallas in this one,but it’s going to be a shootout.
with the Lakers and Pelicans still vying for playoff spots, how crucial is their matchup in the context of the play-in race?
SV: This is a must-win for both teams. Every game in the play-in race is crucial. The Lakers need to find some consistency, and the Pelicans have been playing well with Zion back. It’s going to be a battle.
Coach Van gundy, thank you for yoru insights. We’re in for a great night of basketball!
SV: My pleasure! enjoy the games, everyone!
