LICHENVOORDE – The Antoniushove residential care complex of Careaz in the center of Lichtenvoorde will be given a new name. The building that was built right next to the church has its own entrance, is located on another street and thus gets its own name: Rapenburgerhof. The rest of the residential care center will continue to be called Antoniushove, as before.
To arrive at this new, extra name, Careaz asked residents, family and employees to contribute ideas. This resulted in a multitude of suggestions, including Jozefhoeve, Ludgerhof, DeGirls’ School, De Noabers, De Rapenburg, De Gaper and the Kloosterhuis. The choice fell on Rapenburgerhof, a stately name that matches the appearance of the building and that is historically linked to the location.
Rapenburg is a very old name that has been around in Lichtenvoorde for more than three hundred years. The name also occurs in other places in the Netherlands, but no one can really explain it.
In the eighteenth century, people in Lichtenvoorde already spoke of ‘the house on the Rapenborgh’. The pastor also had a house and barn church on the Rapenborgh. In 1708 there was an official note that mentioned a ‘court situated aen de Steenstrate voor den Rapenborgh’. So the street is apparently named after a location known as the Rapenborgh. The 1832 land registry map referred to Rapen Borgschestraat.
