NFL: a change in regulations for the extension?

NFL Competitiveness Committee Chairman Rich McKay expects the league to discuss the possibility of making changes to its overtime rules.

“I have no doubt that it will be mentioned,” he said, his remarks were reported by the daily “Washington Post” on Sunday. I believe there will be a team that will suggest a rule change.

After his comments from McKay, nfl.com revealed that the Indianapolis Colts have submitted a proposal to ensure teams get at least one possession in overtime, whether in the regular season or the playoffs.

Currently, the NFL’s overtime rule states that both teams can have the ball once in overtime, unless the club initiating it on offense scores a touchdown.

The Goodell circuit’s competitiveness committee met Sunday in Indianapolis, where the evaluation camp for the next draft will begin on Tuesday. That same day, the 32 teams in the league will discuss possible modifications concerning regulatory changes.

For there to be a change, 24 of the 32 clubs must vote in favor.

A few weeks ago, many pointed out the absurdity of the current rule, after the exciting playoff game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills. The latter were unable to touch the ball in overtime after the Missouri team won the toss and scored a major.
